What to Wear for Your Next Photoshoot (Tips from Your Local Vancouver Island Photographer)

Choosing what to wear for your photoshoot can feel a little overwhelming, right? You want to look good, feel confident, and make sure your outfit fits the setting, all without overthinking it.

As a Vancouver Island photographer who spends most sessions outdoors (in forests, beaches, and mountain trails), I’ve learned a few tried-and-true styling tips that always photograph beautifully. This guide will help you plan your outfits so you can show up feeling comfortable, confident, and ready to create some beautiful memories.

1. Comfort Always Comes First

The best photos happen when you feel relaxed and confident, not stiff, itchy or restricted. Choose clothing that fits well, lets you move, and feels like you.

If you’re adjusting, tugging, or feeling uncomfortable, it’ll show in your photos. Go for breathable fabrics, and layers that you can easily move in. When you’re comfortable, your natural connection and emotion will show.

Note: If you're planning to wear a skirt or dress make sure you can sit and move in it comfortably or wear shorts underneath!

2. You Can't Go Wrong with Earthy, Natural Tones

Vancouver Island’s landscapes are full of greens, browns, and blues so earthy and neutral tones always photograph beautifully.

Some of my favourites:

  • Cream, tan, or soft white
  • Olive, rust, or warm brown
  • Muted blue, grey, or sage

These tones work year-round and complement skin tones and backdrops really well.

Note: Try to avoid bright reds, neons, or shiny fabrics near your face because they can reflect colour onto your skin and throw off natural tones.

3. Avoid Busy Patterns and Big Logos

Simple is best. Tiny stripes, checks, or busy intricate patterns can cause weird effects in digital images (called moiré). Big logos or brand names can also distract from what really matters (you and your connection).

Choosing solid colours or soft, larger patterns can feel timeless and don’t steal attention from your expressions!

4. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Matching outfits (like everyone in identical shirts) can look too staged. Instead, coordinate your colours and tones.

Pick a small palette (for an example: grey, brown, navy and cream). Layering different textures (like knits, linen, or denim) adds depth and keeps your photos looking natural and cohesive.

Big tip: If you’re planning a family or group session, mix light and dark pieces across everyone so the tones blend nicely without creating horizontal “lines” across each person's waists in the images.

5. Prioritize Warm and Comfortable Feet

No matter the season, comfortable footwear is a must. Wear shoes or boots you can walk and climb in easily. Your comfort and safety always come first.

6. Dress for the Location, and the Weather

Vancouver Island weather can change quickly, so layers are always your friend!

For spring, summer & fall:
  • Avoid strong perfumes or scented sprays, bugs love them, and they’re especially active in the warmer months.

For winter:
  • Bring extra dry socks! If you're on wet trails or beach shores, you’ll be so glad you did.
  • Bringing a jacket (even if you don't want to wear it in your photos) can be great to walk in in-between shots to stay warm and comfortable.

For Rainy wet days:
  • If there's any chance of rain or snow, I would recommend picking fabrics that won't "look wet". For example, a wool sweater won't show patchy wet spots, whereas a thin cotton T-shirt might if it gets damp.

If your session involves water or adventure:

Planning to get your feet wet, kayak, swim, or explore near water?

  • Bring a change of clothes and a towel, just in case! Vancouver Island adventures tend to have a way of turning playful and spontaneous, and it’s always better to be prepared.

7. Choose Outfits with Movement

Flowing dresses, skirts, or loose layers add beautiful motion and life to your images. They can catch the breeze and create natural movement.

If dresses aren’t your thing, even a cozy cardigan, flowy top or scarf can add subtle flow and movement in your images.

8. Stay True to You

At the end of the day, your photos are about your story, not your clothes. Choose pieces that feel authentic to you and reflect your personality.

For you this might be a cozy knit sweater, your favourite worn-in boots, a linen dress that flows in the wind, or even your biking gear. Wear what makes you feel amazing, and represents you!

When you feel comfortable and confident, your photos naturally feel more full connection, and comfort.
